Early Years Classrooms: Furniture for Kindergartens and Preschools

Furniture for three- to six-year-olds looks simple and is anything but. Children at this age climb, lean, sit sideways and tip backwards on chair legs, and they put everything in their mouths. A piece that would be perfectly safe for a ten-year-old can be a genuine hazard in a preschool room.

Scale Comes First

Tables and chairs must match the children, not the room. Seat heights around the lower end of the range allow feet to rest flat on the floor, which is what makes sitting stable. Tables should be low enough for elbows to rest comfortably during drawing and craft work. Because children in one class differ in size, provide at least two heights per room rather than one standard size, and keep chairs and tables paired so trays, legs and heights work together.

Safety Details That Matter

Rounded and radiused edges are essential at this age, along with anti-tip design on storage and shelving that children may climb. Chairs must not tip easily when a child leans back or rocks, and there should be no gaps or pinch points where small fingers can be trapped — including folding mechanisms and stacking joints. Any paint, laminate or finish should be suitable for children's products in your market, and fixings should be covered or smooth.

Plan for Mess and Daily Cleaning

Early years rooms are cleaned constantly. Choose wipeable surfaces, sealed edges and finishes that tolerate disinfectants without fading. Avoid open fabric weaves and heavy pile where playdough, paint and food will collect. If you include soft play or reading corners, specify removable, washable covers. Storage should be low, open and labelled so children can reach and tidy up themselves, with lockable cupboards for cleaning supplies.

Arrange Rooms Around Activities

Most preschool rooms are zoned: a group table area, a floor or carpet zone, a creative and messy zone, a quiet corner and a rest area with stackable cots or mats. Keep walkways clear for crawling and running, position shelving as room dividers, and make sure every zone can be supervised from the main teaching position.
