Hotel Terraces and Poolside Areas: Outdoor Furniture That Survives

Indoor furniture is protected. Poolside and terrace furniture sits in ultraviolet light, rain, chlorinated water, sunscreen, salt air and wind — often all in the same week. Resorts that buy on appearance rather than material specification usually replace their outdoor stock far sooner than planned, and the failure is rarely subtle: faded frames, flaking finishes, mouldy cushions and rusted fixings.

Start With the Frame and Fixings

Powder-coated aluminium is the workhorse of commercial outdoor furniture: light, rust-free and easy to move at the end of the day. Teak and other suitable hardwoods weather gracefully but need maintenance and must be genuinely suitable for outdoor use. Rope and woven synthetic seats are comfortable and durable provided the weave is UV-stabilised. Avoid standard painted steel, which rusts at any scratch, and insist on stainless or otherwise corrosion-resistant fixings — screws and bolts are usually the first thing to fail.

Cushions: Quick-Dry or None

Standard foam soaks up water and stays wet inside for days, which is how mould starts. Specify quick-dry foam with drainage channels, or water-resistant cores with mesh bases that let water pass through. Fabrics should be solution-dyed and UV-resistant, and covers should be removable for cleaning. Many hotels solve the problem more simply by choosing sling, rope or mesh seating and keeping cushions to a minimum.

Design for Wind, Storage and Cleaning

Stackable and nesting designs let staff clear terraces quickly before storms and stack furniture overnight. Heavy bases or fixed feet prevent loungers and umbrellas from being blown over. Choose light, neutral colours that hide marks and stay cool to sit on in strong sun, and avoid designs with water traps, closed legs or places where leaves and chlorine collect.

Plan Replacement Parts Up Front

Outdoor furniture gets knocked, dragged and dropped. Agree with your supplier which parts can be reordered — glides, feet, frame sections, cushions and straps — and keep a modest stock of the components that fail first. That small inventory usually pays for itself in a single season.

Send us your terrace and poolside layouts, and we will propose a specification built for your climate, pool chemicals and storage routine.
