Armchairs and Accent Chairs: What Buyers Should Look For

Retailers who sell sofas almost always sell chairs, and for good reason. An accent chair adds colour and shape to a room, fills an awkward corner, and lifts the average order value without needing a new production line. But chairs are bought and judged differently from sofas: customers sit in them briefly, look at them head-on, and expect them to read as a design piece as much as a seat.

The Frame Decides the Price and the Life

Chairs range from fully upholstered hardwood frames to simple plywood shells with foam. Ask what the frame is made of, how the joints are reinforced and whether the legs are solid timber, metal or a veneered block. At the budget end, a plywood shell is perfectly reasonable if it is thick enough and properly supported — the problem is thin material that flexes and creaks. For swivel and lounge chairs, the base and bearing are the parts most likely to fail.

Comfort Is Measured, Not Felt

Seat height, seat depth and back angle decide whether a chair suits a dining table, a bedroom corner or a living room. A chair for reading can be deeper and more reclined; a chair for a hallway or office should be easier to get out of. Cushion density matters too: soft foam feels luxurious in a showroom and flattens within a year. Request density values and test a sample over weeks rather than minutes.

Fabric and Finish Sell the Chair

Accent chairs are often where customers experiment with colour, texture and pattern — boucle, velvet, chenille and woven textures all sell well in this category. Provide a coherent palette that matches your sofa range so a chair can be bought alongside one. Confirm that the upholstery is removable where practical and that fabric quantities are standardised across models, which keeps both pricing and reordering simple.

Build a Small, Coherent Range

Rather than offering twenty chairs, offer a few well-chosen silhouettes in several fabrics: a compact occasional chair, a deeper lounge chair and a swivel option cover most needs. Consistent dimensions and packaging make container planning easier, and shared components simplify spares.

Send us your sofa range and target price points, and we will recommend an armchair collection that complements it — with fabric options, dimensions and sample timing.
