When hybrid working shrank the number of desks in many offices, break areas grew. They now host informal meetings, onboarding chats, lunch and quiet catch-ups — often all before noon. That range of uses is what makes them difficult to furnish well: the wrong mix turns the space into a corridor with chairs, or a canteen nobody lingers in.

Plan Three Simple Zones

Most successful break areas combine three settings. A café zone with high tables and stools suits quick meals and stand-up conversations. A lounge zone with comfortable chairs and sofas suits longer discussions and informal one-to-ones. A few enclosed or screened seats give people somewhere to take a personal call without leaving the floor. Keep circulation wide enough for people carrying trays and laptops.

Choose Materials That Handle Food and Drink

This is the messiest room in the office. Specify wipeable table surfaces, sealed edges and fabrics that resist staining and can be spot-cleaned. Avoid pale untreated textiles and open-weave cushions that trap crumbs. Stools and chairs should be stable when someone leans back, and light enough for staff to move for cleaning. Where a kitchenette sits within the space, choose surfaces and feet that tolerate water and cleaning products.

Make It Easy to Reset

Shared space only works if it returns to ready quickly. Standardised chairs of one or two types stack or nest, tables with central pedestals are easier to clean around, and bin and tray positions should be obvious. A small amount of lockable storage keeps cables, cleaning supplies and event equipment out of sight.

Design in Comfort and Acoustic Control

Hard surfaces, high ceilings and a busy lunch hour make break areas loud. Upholstered seating, acoustic panels and felt light fittings reduce noise considerably, and soft seating placed away from the coffee queue lowers the background level where people want to talk. Test the layout with a busy lunchtime in mind, not an empty floor.

Send us your floor plan and staff numbers, and we will propose a break-area mix of café, lounge and focus settings with durable, cleanable finishes.
