Furnishing Higher Education Spaces: Lecture Halls, Study Areas and Campus Hubs

A university campus is a small town that opens early and closes late. Students eat, study, sleep between classes and work in groups, often in the same building. The furniture has to survive adult use, spilled coffee, laptop bags, heavy doors and a cleaning crew that has limited time. Specifying it like secondary-school furniture is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes.

Lecture Halls: Fixed or Flexible?

Tiered lecture theatres usually need fixed or floor-mounted seating with writing tablets, since nothing moves and the layout rarely changes. Prioritise seat width, legroom between rows and aisle widths for quick evacuation, and choose a tablet that is genuinely usable with a laptop. For flat-floor rooms, movable tables and chairs give timetabling flexibility and let one room serve lectures, seminars and exams. Check sightlines from the back row and confirm how power reaches student seats.

Study Areas: Support Long Sessions

Library and study furniture is used for hours at a time: individual desks with screens or partitions, quiet-zone chairs, and powered tables for laptops. Adjustability matters more here than in schools because students differ greatly in size. Group study rooms need tables that seat four to six with power at the table, and acoustic treatment so conversation does not leak into quiet zones.

Campus Hubs: Comfortable Enough to Stay

Break-out and hub spaces compete with cafés and home. Soft seating, high tables with stools, and quiet booths for video calls all have a role, but each must be cleanable and robust. Choose fabrics that tolerate food, and avoid deep cushions that are difficult for older staff and visitors to rise from.

Plan Maintenance Across a Large Inventory

Hundreds of identical items mean small failures become visible quickly. Standardise models across buildings, hold spares of the parts that wear — castors, glides, tablet hinges, upholstery — and agree a repair rather than replace policy with your supplier.

Send us your room schedules, capacities and usage patterns, and we will propose specifications for lecture halls, study zones and campus hubs.
