Leather sells sofas. It also causes more disputes between importers and factories than almost any other material, because the same word describes products that behave completely differently. A retailer who orders "leather" without specifying the grade can receive something that cracks within a year — while the invoice looked perfectly reasonable.
Full grain leather keeps the original surface of the hide, including its natural markings. It is the most durable and most expensive, and it develops a patina with use. Top grain leather has the outermost layer lightly sanded or buffed to remove imperfections, giving a more uniform surface with slightly less durability than full grain. Split leather comes from the lower part of the hide; it has no natural grain, so a surface finish is applied — often embossed to imitate grain. Bonded leather is reconstituted from leather fibres with a binder and backing; it is the cheapest and least durable, and its surface can peel.
Ask the factory to state the grade in writing on the specification sheet and the invoice, and to send a sample of the exact material before production. Look at the edge of a sample: split and bonded leathers reveal a fabric or fibre backing, while full and top grain show a solid leather cross-section. Check whether "genuine leather", "real leather" or "leather match" appear without a grade — these terms are flexible and should trigger a question. Where a sofa combines materials, confirm which panels use which grade.
Write the grade, thickness where relevant, finish type and colour reference into the purchase order, and keep an approved sample sealed with both parties. Agree how cleaning and aging should be expected to behave, and include the care instructions customers will receive. For markets with labelling rules, confirm the wording allowed on the product and packaging.
Send us your target retail price and preferred leather grade, and we will confirm options, sample timing and the exact wording for your specification sheet.
