Managing Fabric Consistency in Sofa Orders: Swatches, Lab Dips and Batch Variation

Fabric is the most visible part of any sofa and the hardest to keep identical over time. Natural fibres, dye lots and finishing processes all introduce variation, and a small shift is invisible on one sofa but obvious when twelve sit in the same showroom.

Consistency is not luck; it is a process agreed at order stage.

Why Batches Differ

• Dye lots vary slightly even with the same formula — the most common source of colour shift.

• Fibre type. Natural fibres such as linen and cotton vary more than solution-dyed synthetics.

• Finishing and brushing affect texture and sheen, which changes how colour reads.

• Lighting makes two swatches look identical in one room and different in another.

Practical Controls

• Approve a lab dip before bulk fabric is produced, and keep the approved dip as your reference.

• Hold a master swatch signed by both parties, stored away from daylight.

• Define tolerance in words and process — for example, acceptable visual match under specified lighting, since a numeric-only tolerance is easy to misread.

• Reserve one dye lot for large or repeat orders to keep a program consistent.

• Keep swatch sets per order so future reorders can be matched against the actual production.

• Document everything in the purchase order: fabric code, supplier, composition, care instructions and approval reference.

Handling Differences at Delivery

• Inspect against the approved swatch under controlled lighting, not against memory.

• Photograph findings in daylight, not flash, as evidence.

• Decide quickly between acceptance, credit or replacement — delays complicate the picture.

• For reorders, specify "same dye lot as previous order" where possible, and expect small variation as normal in textiles.
