Furniture Digital Product Passport: 2028 EU Deadline

The European Commission's Digital Product Passport Registry became operational on 20 July 2026, an important milestone in the rollout of product passports under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. Sector-specific requirements for furniture are expected to follow through a delegated act in 2028.

What a Digital Product Passport is

A Digital Product Passport is a digital container for product, component and material information, created under the Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR) (EU) 2024/1781. A data carrier such as a QR code links the physical product to its passport, and different users — buyers, repairers, recyclers and market surveillance authorities — see the information relevant to them. Depending on the product group, the passport may carry data on safety, origin, materials, repairability, environmental performance, reuse and recycling.

Where furniture sits in the timeline

Batteries are first: passports become mandatory for certain battery types, including electric vehicle, light means of transport and industrial batteries, on 18 February 2027. Delegated acts for textiles, aluminium and tyres are expected in 2027, followed by furniture in 2028 and mattresses in 2029. After a delegated act is adopted, economic operators receive a transition period of at least 18 months before the requirements bite.

Why sofa makers should prepare early

A sofa is one of the more complex consumer products to document, because it combines several material streams in one item: a frame, foam, upholstery, fillings, a suspension system, mechanisms and legs. Assembling that data after the delegated act lands will be the slow part, not publishing it. Three practical moves: start collecting material composition and supplier declarations per component now; record repairability information such as replaceable covers and cushions as a design feature; and appoint one data owner per product family so records stay current as specifications change.
