School Furniture Standards and Certifications: What Overseas Buyers Should Ask

School furniture sits at the intersection of child safety, public procurement and institutional durability. When something fails, the consequences reach further than a normal commercial sale — which is why certificates are asked for long before price is discussed.

The confusion for buyers is that requirements differ by market, and some certificates that look impressive have nothing to do with the product you are buying.

Standards Worth Asking About

Requirements vary by destination, so treat this as a starting checklist and confirm specifics with your testing lab or compliance advisor:

  • Educational furniture standards. In many European markets, the EN 1729 series is referenced for classroom chair and table dimensions and safety — ask whether your supplier can demonstrate conformity.

  • Strength and stability testing. Reports showing desks and chairs pass relevant load, impact and stability tests for their product type.

  • Indoor air quality and emissions. Low-emission boards, adhesives and finishes, supported by recognised third-party certification, matter in enclosed classrooms.

  • Children's product safety. Markets such as the United States apply lead and phthalate limits to children's products — confirm which of your items fall in scope, plus any labelling obligations.

  • Timber sourcing. FSC or equivalent chain-of-custody evidence for wood components.

  • Factory quality systems. ISO 9001-type certification tells you the process is managed, not just the product.

  • Fire performance for upholstered classroom seating, where local rules require it.

Verify, Don't Just Collect

  • Check that the certificate names the product or model you are ordering, not a generic category.

  • Note the report date and validity, and whether the testing body is recognised in your market.

  • Ask for test reports, not just logos, and see whether they are available for the current version of the item.

  • Tie compliance into the purchase order so reorders stay certified.

We supply test documentation with our school furniture ranges and support buyers' local compliance checks. Tell us your destination market and we will confirm what applies.
