Custom Sofas: Sizes, Fabrics and Tooling Questions

Importers building a private-label range need to know where flexibility ends and investment begins. These five questions cover what can genuinely be customized on a sofa order, how custom sizes and fabrics affect order minimums, when a new frame requires tooling investment, how a custom color is approved, and the extra time a custom program takes.

Q1. What can genuinely be customized on a sofa order?

Most customization falls into four areas: dimensions, fabric and color, comfort specification, and finish details such as legs, piping and stitching. Length, seat depth and arm width can often be varied within a frame family without new tooling, while comfort is tuned through foam density, filling blend and suspension. Finish details are the cheapest changes and the ones shoppers notice most. A new silhouette or seat platform is a different conversation entirely.

Q2. Does a custom size or fabric raise the minimum order quantity?

Often yes, and usually more for fabric than for size. A new size inside an existing frame family may order at the normal minimum, while a custom fabric adds its own mill minimum on top. A mill-dyed or exclusive color is typically quoted in meters, which then has to be converted into how many sofas it covers. Short or long frame variants can also change cutting efficiency and packing volume.

Q3. When does a new frame or mold require tooling investment?

A new frame needs tooling when the change affects frame geometry, joinery or the upholstery pattern rather than the finish. Cutting templates, pattern blocks and any molded foam shapes for arms, backs or seat platforms are the items that carry real setup cost, and curved silhouettes carry more than straight ones. Ask for a written list of what the tooling covers, whether it is a one-off charge, and who owns the pattern afterwards.

Q4. How is a custom fabric or color approved before production?

Through a physical swatch approved under the intended light and signed off in writing, never from a screen or a photograph. Ask for a swatch from the actual production lot where the quantity allows, and compare it against the agreed standard under daylight and warm indoor light. Record the mill, article number, color name, composition, cleaning code and dye lot on the approval sheet, then reference it in the purchase order.

Q5. How much longer does a custom sofa program take?

Add sampling and tooling time in front of the normal production window, and expect the first order to run longer than every order that follows it. The added time comes from pattern making and a sample build, fabric production at the mill, and template or tooling preparation. Approval rounds are the real variable, so fix the specification before the sample is built rather than after.

Bottom line: Custom sofa programs reward buyers who freeze the specification early, because most added cost and delay comes from changes made after sampling.
