An art room and a music room look like design opportunities, but they are really workshops. Art rooms host wet media, clay dust, cutting tools and drying work. Music rooms host instruments, cases, stands and the noise of a full rehearsal. Furniture that works beautifully in a general classroom often fails in both.

Planning these rooms is a useful test of whether a supplier understands how schools actually use space — and it is a category where a small number of well-chosen pieces outperform a long catalogue.

Art Rooms: Design for Mess and Movement

Art rooms need to accommodate several activities at once: drawing at tables, working at easels, cutting and gluing, drying work, and storing materials between lessons.

  • Work tables should be large enough for A1 boards and shared materials. Height-adjustable tables allow both younger and older students to work comfortably, and standing-height options suit larger pieces.

  • Surfaces must tolerate water, paint, solvents and clay. A sealed, easily wiped top is more valuable than a beautiful veneer that stains in the first term.

  • Storage is the defining feature of a good art room: shallow drying racks, deep shelves for paper, labelled bins for clay and consumables, lockable cupboards for tools and aerosols.

  • Sinks and wet zones need clearance around them and a floor that copes with spills; furniture near sinks should have sealed edges and corrosion-resistant fittings.

  • Drying space is usually underestimated. Vertical racks and mobile drying trolleys save floor area compared with laying work on every available surface.

  • Easels and stools should be stable, stackable and light enough for students to move safely.

Avoid upholstered pieces near wet or dusty work. Where soft seating is wanted for critique sessions, choose wipe-clean covers and removable cushions.

Music Rooms: Instruments Change the Furniture Brief

Music rooms have different constraints. Instruments are heavy, fragile and expensive, and rehearsal is loud.

  • Seating must support posture for playing: adjustable stools and chairs without arms for instrumentalists, plus stacking chairs for choirs and audiences.

  • Storage is critical: instrument cupboards, trolleys for percussion, racks for stands and secure storage for smaller instruments. Check door openings and corridor turns before specifying deep cabinets.

  • Acoustics work in two directions. Rehearsal rooms need absorption to control volume, while practice rooms need isolation. Acoustic panels, heavy doors and carpet help, but the furniture layout matters too: hard, empty rooms ring.

  • Flexibility matters because the same room may host a rehearsal, a theory lesson and a concert. Choose nestable or stacking furniture that can be cleared quickly.

  • Cable and power access for keyboards, amplifiers and recording equipment should be planned at the layout stage, not added later with trailing leads.

Practical Procurement Notes

  • Ask for surface samples and clean them with the products the school actually uses before approving.

  • Confirm weight ratings for instrument storage, not just shelf thickness.

  • Check that mobile pieces have locking castors and that everything fits through the room's door width.

  • Plan a spare set of glides, feet and fixings; these rooms are hard on small parts.

  • Consider noise transfer to neighbouring classrooms when positioning storage and seating against shared walls.

Creative rooms are among the most memorable spaces in a school. Specifying for the materials and instruments that will actually be used keeps them working long after the first cohort has moved on.
