Sectional and Corner Sofa Configurations: A Guide for Retailers

Most customers who buy a sectional are solving a room problem: an awkward corner, a long wall, or a family that needs more seats than a three-seater can offer. Because the purchase is driven by space, the sale depends on configuration rather than on style alone — and that is exactly where orders go wrong.

The Main Configurations

An L-shaped corner sofa is the most common solution: a straight run turning into a chaise or a shorter return. U-shaped and large modular arrangements suit bigger rooms and seat more people, but they need floor space and clearance on at least two sides. A sofa with a reversible chaise is a useful compromise for retailers, since one shell suits both left and right corners and reduces the number of SKUs you must stock.

How the Pieces Join

Corner sections are either dedicated corner units or two sofas pushed together. Check how sections connect — brackets, interlocking plates or simple push-fit — and whether the connection holds when someone sits on the joint. Modular systems that share one seat depth and height are more flexible to sell and simpler to reorder if a single section is damaged. Confirm that covers and fillings are consistent across sections produced in different batches.

Sizing for Real Rooms

Publish the overall width, depth and the length of each return, plus the minimum room the piece suits. Customers regularly underestimate circulation: a sectional that fills a room looks impressive in a showroom and cramped at home. Advise on clearance for doorways and stairwells too, since corner sections are the hardest pieces to move in and out.

Stock the Configurations That Sell

Most retailers do well with a small, clear range: one L-shape with reversible chaise, one modular system that can be built as L or U, and one compact corner sofa for apartments. Standardising seat depth, fabric and leg height across the range keeps reorders, spares and displays simple.

Send us your floor plans and target price points, and we will recommend configurations, section dimensions and packaging for a coherent corner-sofa range.
