Height-Adjustable School Chairs: A Buyer's Specification Checklist

Define the Height Range and Size Marks First

The height range is the first detail a supplier will ask for, and the most common place an order goes wrong. Instead of describing a chair as "junior" or "senior", work from the size-mark system the school already uses and convert each mark into a seat-height band in millimetres, measured to the top of the seat surface.

A chair covering a wide band with fewer marks simplifies stockholding and makes reordering predictable. A chair covering a narrow band fits students more precisely, but multiplies the number of codes you must hold and replenish separately. Ask the supplier to state the lowest and highest seat height of each model, and to confirm which desktop heights pair with each setting.

The Adjustment Mechanism Decides the Warranty Conversation

Bolt-and-screw adjustment is the simplest and generally the most robust under heavy daily use, because there is almost nothing to break. Lever and gas-lift mechanisms are faster for staff to reset, but they add moving parts that wear. If students can reach the release, assume it will be operated in every lesson.

Two further points matter as much as the mechanism itself. Locking: a mechanism that releases under load is a safety issue, not an inconvenience, so ask how the chosen adjustment locks at each position. Steel tube gauge: thicker walls and larger tube diameters resist bending at the joints, which is where most chairs eventually fail. Seat depth and seat-to-back angle also deserve a line on your specification sheet, because a chair can be the right height and still be uncomfortable for a fourteen-year-old.

Test a Sample Before You Commit

Photographs and drawings will not tell you how a chair behaves under a restless class. Order one sample of the exact model and setting you intend to buy, then work through a short check:

• Measure the seat height at every position and confirm each one locks firmly without wobble.

• Rock the chair side to side and front to back to judge flex at the frame joints.

• Check that seat and back edges are radiused and free of sharp or unfinished edges.

• Confirm day-to-day height changes can be made without a separate tool.

• Ask what the warranty covers on the mechanism, separately from the frame and finish.
