Product Spotlight: The Acoustic Desk Screen

The acoustic desk screen is the divider that lets open-plan bench desking work without walls. It gives seated occupants a visual boundary, absorbs some reflected sound, and often carries power and data along the desk. It suits corporate fit-outs, coworking floors and contact centers where density is high and enclosure is low.

Product positioning and design logic

Screens sit between furniture and infrastructure. As furniture, they belong to the bench system: they must align with the desk frame, survive being leaned on and accept a fabric that suits the interior. As infrastructure, they carry cables above or below the work surface and may support monitors or lighting. The design logic is zonal rather than private: a screen marks where one person's territory ends, reduces the sense of a long shared table, and takes the edge off a noisy floor without enclosing anyone.

Structure and materials

Most panels use an absorptive core — felt, recycled fiber or foam — wrapped in fabric and pressed into a frame. The core does the acoustic work; the wrap decides how the screen looks and wears. Edge treatment matters, because a thin or raw edge frays where bags and chairs rub it. Mounting follows the bench: clamp-on brackets for existing desks, freestanding feet where the desk cannot be drilled, and rail systems for long runs. Cables pass through grommets, base cut-outs or a hollow spine. Faces can be pinnable, wipeable or both.

Best-fit applications and selection notes

Begin with the privacy actually required. A low screen shields a seated sightline across the desk; a taller one blocks standing views and adds presence, but also cuts daylight and supervision. Where sound absorption is the goal, ask for documented test data rather than accepting a product name. Confirm the panel suits the existing bench and can be retrofitted without drilling. Check cleaning instructions and whether covers can be re-covered. On a sample, lean on the panel, push it sideways, and inspect the edge and bracket joints.
