A recliner sofa looks like a sofa until the mechanism moves. That single change shifts the buying decision away from upholstery and toward mechanics: how the seat reclines, how much room the action needs, and how the piece will be serviced years later in a customer's living room.
A recliner is bought for comfort that cannot be judged from a photograph, so positioning has to be built on how the piece behaves in use. The design logic starts with the mechanism family, because the recline geometry sets the frame, the seat depth, the back angle and the clearance the sofa needs. Upholstery then follows: covers are chosen around a shape that already works mechanically, not the other way round. That order of decisions is what separates a credible recliner program from a sofa with a mechanism added late.
Operation comes first: a manual lever or handle keeps the piece independent of power, while electric models add a motor, switch and wiring that must be routed and reached. Wall-hugging geometry reduces the clearance needed behind the back but changes the recline path. Frame and mechanism grade decide how the action feels after years of use, and seat foam has to hold support through the whole travel rather than only upright. The footrest, battery backup and a cover chosen for flexing all belong in the same conversation.
Clearance drives specification more than style does. The mechanism needs space behind the backrest and open floor in front of the footrest, and the layout has to keep both clear of traffic and rugs. A tall user needs a longer footrest and a deeper seat than a compact one. Access to power should be confirmed before electric models are quoted, and buyers should ask how the mechanism is reached, adjusted and replaced. Sit on a sample through the full travel, and listen for noise.
At a glance:
Recline geometry and clearance matter more than upholstery
Manual lever or electric operation, with battery backup option
Test the full travel and confirm mechanism service access
