Reclining sofas carry more moving parts than any other upholstered product, and those parts decide whether the sofa is a repeat seller or a source of warranty claims. Before adding a recliner to your range, it is worth understanding what is inside it.

Manual or Electric

Manual recliners use a lever or handle and a spring-assisted mechanism — simpler, lighter and cheaper, with fewer components to fail. Electric recliners use a motor, control switch and often a USB charging port. They sell well in premium markets and for older customers, but they need a power supply at the sofa, and the motor, transformer and switch become the critical parts for after-sales support. Some models offer both, letting a single frame serve two price points.

Check the Mechanism and the Frame

Look at how the seat and backrest travel: a mechanism should move smoothly through its full range without grabbing, and return without a bang. Ask what the mechanism is rated for and how many cycles it has been tested to — this is the single most useful specification to request. Confirm the frame around the mechanism is reinforced, since this area takes repeated stress, and check that the footrest locks securely in the raised position.

Don't Forget Clearances and Safety

A recliner needs space behind it to recline and, for wall-hugger designs, much less. Customers who measure only the closed depth are the ones who return the sofa, so publish both closed and reclined depth clearly. Check finger-crush protection in the mechanism, cable routing on powered models and the position of the control switch. For families, confirm how the footrest behaves if someone sits on the edge while it is raised.

Think About Service Before You Sell

Ask your supplier which parts are replaceable, how quickly motors and switches can be shipped, and whether mechanisms are standard across models. Keep a small stock of the components most likely to fail, and include clear instructions for pairing a replacement motor with the existing handset.
