How Leg Choice Changes Height and Look

The base sets the visual weight of a sofa as much as the upholstery does. A tall leg lifts the frame, makes a room feel larger and lets light pass underneath, while a low leg or a solid plinth grounds the sofa and reads heavier. Leg height also affects how easily a customer rises from the seat and whether a vacuum or robot cleaner fits below.

Shape carries the rest of the message. Splayed legs angle outward for a mid-century look, tapered legs in a turned or square profile suit more traditional schemes, and straight cylindrical legs sit between the two. Because leg height adds to overall height, buyers should publish it as a separate figure so retailers can show true proportions.

Timber, Metal and Plastic Under Load

Timber legs are the common default. Hardwoods with a straight grain take screws and load well; softwoods are lighter and cheaper but deform more easily at the fixing point. Metal legs and frames carry high loads in a small cross-section, which suits slim profiles, and powder-coated finishes resist chipping better than bare paint.

Plastic legs and glides are usually reserved for hidden positions or entry price points, where their role is floor protection. Whichever material is chosen, load is concentrated at the mounting plate rather than spread across the leg, so the fixing method is the weakest link. Ask how legs are attached, whether mounting plates are inset into the frame, and how many fixings each leg carries.

Removable Legs, Floor Protection and Spares

Detachable legs reduce packed height and therefore shipping volume, and they make it far easier to move a sofa through a narrow doorway. The trade-off is that assembly quality now sits with the customer, so fittings should be simple, clearly numbered and supplied with a defined tool size.

For floor protection, specify the glide or foot material against the surfaces the sofa will sit on, and confirm whether the foot is replaceable. Levelling matters where floors are uneven: adjustable feet remove the wobble that otherwise becomes a complaint. Finally, buyers should ask whether the same leg profile is shared across the range and whether replacement legs can be ordered separately, since a leg is the part most likely to be lost or damaged in a house move.
