What Suspension Actually Does

Suspension carries the load placed on a seat and returns it, so it shapes both the initial feel of a sofa and the resilience of the piece after years of use. It also protects the foam above it: a weak or uneven platform forces cushions to absorb work they were not designed for, which shows up as sagging and complaints.

Because suspension sits between the frame and the cushion, it is easy to overlook during sampling. It deserves the same scrutiny as foam, since replacing it later is far more disruptive than replacing a cover.

The Four Main Types

Sinuous or zig-zag spring is steel wire formed into continuous rows and clipped to the frame rails. It is efficient, widely available and predictable in performance, though the feel is more uniform than hand work and the rows can loosen if clips are under-specified.

Elastic webbing is woven or rubber webbing stretched in a crossing pattern across the seat rails. It is light, economical and simple to replace, but it relaxes over time and suits lighter-duty seating better than heavy daily use.

Pocket coil units are individually fabric-encased coils assembled as a single deck. They respond independently, giving localized support similar to a mattress, and can be swapped as one component. Eight-way hand-tied coil springs, tied by hand in eight directions, remain the traditional benchmark for resilience and bespoke feel, but they are labor-intensive and rare outside premium programs.

Durability, Cost and Repairability

Cost generally rises from webbing and sinuous spring through pocket coil to hand-tied construction, with expected resilience following a similar trend when the frame and foam support it properly. Repairability deserves a place in the same conversation: webbing and sinuous rows can be renewed locally, while a hand-tied unit usually requires more extensive workshop work.

Inspection is straightforward. Sit for several minutes and listen for a distinct creak or metal click that suggests loose clips. Press the center and then the front edge to feel whether support is even. Where the model allows, look underneath for sagging rows, slack webbing or corroded points, and ask whether the frame carries a support rail, because any suspension needs something solid to anchor to.
