The Frame: The Sofa's Skeleton

The frame carries every other component and all your weight, so its quality sets the ceiling for the whole sofa:

• Kiln-dried hardwood. Properly dried hardwood resists warping and cracking. Ask what wood is used and how it is dried.

• Plywood and engineered options. Quality plywood frames can be excellent when built with sufficient thickness and proper construction; the cheapest particleboard should be a red flag.

• Joinery. Corner blocks, screws and glue at every joint beat simple staples and nails. A frame that creaks or flexes when you rock in the corner will only get worse.

• Test it. Lift a corner of the sofa — a quality frame shows little twist. Sit near the front edge and feel for flex or noise.

Suspension: What Supports You

Suspension sits between the frame and the cushions, carrying the real load of sitting:

• Sinuous springs. Zigzag steel springs, properly gauged and spaced, offer durable, consistent support at a sensible cost — the most common quality choice.

• Coil springs. Individually placed coils give a deeper, more traditional "float" and are found in higher-end sofas.

• Webbing. Elastomeric webbing can work well in lighter-use seating, but quality and tension vary enormously.

• Check the grid. Springs should be closely spaced, firmly attached to the frame and free of rust or coating damage.

Cushions: Comfort That Lasts

Cushion filling determines the feel — firm, soft or bouncy — and how long that feel survives:

• Foam density matters more than thickness. High-density foam (measured in weight per volume) supports body weight without collapsing. Low-density foam feels fine in the showroom and sags within a year.

• Layered construction. Many quality cushions wrap a firm high-resilience foam core in softer foam or fiber for a plush top layer over lasting support.

• Feather and fiber blends. Luxurious softness comes at the cost of daily fluffing — and, in some cases, feathers working through the fabric.

• Removable, replaceable cushions. Interchangeable cushion covers and replaceable cores let a good sofa be renewed instead of replaced.

Testing a Sofa Like a Buyer

• Sit at the front edge — the most stressful position — and feel for frame flex.

• Sit and rise repeatedly in the same spot; watch how quickly the cushion recovers.

• Lift a corner to test frame rigidity.

• Ask for the construction details — frame wood, spring type, foam density — and compare honestly between suppliers.
